‘Illumination’ arrives

‘Illumination’ the long-awaited new LP by Kevin Purdy has finally arrived on our shores. This beautiful 140gm vinyl lovely is loud and very good-looking. Kevin has stripped back his multi-layered production style, creating an album of deep and rich textural sound voyages. Focusing on his Ebo guitar and synth work, often heard floating around on Tooth and Purdy releases, Kevin has created a wonderous collection of ambient, minimal dub and improvised works. This is essentially a Kevin Purdy solo LP, excepting the last track, ‘Cloud Shadows on Hill’ which features a vocal performance by the legendary Amanda Stewart (Poet, performer: Machines For Making Sense, Metalog, etc).

You can order the LP here or through Bandcamp, where you can alternatively download the album if you wish. You can also get yourself a copy of ‘Illumination’ in Sydney at Title Music, Egg Records and Red Eye Records, in Melbourne it’s available at Round and Round Records in Brunswick. There  will be stock in other states soon. All LPs come with a free download card and a specially made sticker.

First Light Through Mist – Illumination SOFT008

New Soft Records release on it’s way!

‘Illumination’ the latest album by Kevin Purdy has just left the King Willy Sound mastering lab and is sounding damn fine.

This album has Purdy stripping back his sound to its minimal essence, focusing on creating a series of beautifully dark ambient landscapes. As this album is somewhat of a departure from his previous Purdy releases, he will be using his full name.

Illumination will be out early 2012 (alien invasion or apocalypse withstanding), as a limited vinyl LP release, which will also contain a download code for Bandcamp .

More gig  and release news will be coming your way soon.

Autumn News

Purdy and his wonderful 5 peice band are returning to the                Red Rattler in Marrickville for another night of musical wonders on Saturday 21st of May.  After searching high and low for other suitable venues in Sydney, apart from the RR, for gigs, we decided “Bugger It” let’s just just stay where the love is. So Purdy is returning to the Red Rattler, with support by Melodie Nelson, plus the eminent Sir Robbo on the decks. This is definitely one show to put in your diary.

And just a reminder that the Purdy and Tooth catalogue is now up on Bandcamp. Which is great as it means you can now download the albums at a much nicer price than iTunes and co. in any format you wish. You can also buy CDs direct from there or by clicking on the Buy Now button on this page.

We will be putting some nice rarities from the Soft Records vaults up on BandCamp in the very near future.

New News

The ‘Deviant Nature’ launch at the Red Rattler was an extraordinarily beautiful night, with Purdy and his band joyfully re-interpreting the album, delighting the delightful audience with handfuls of sonic bliss. Sir Robbo and Lars Chresta supplied perfect DJ sets to compliment the night, with pulsings of the Velvets, Stereolab, Krautrock and pure pop rockin’ the happy listeners. Much thanks to the Red Rattler for providing the perfect venue.

Unfortunately our second gig fot the year at Raval has been cancelled. We’ll update you with future gig info as it comes to hand.

The Purdy album catalogue is now available for download on Band Camp, including his 1st solo album ‘Kevolution’, which has been unavailable for around 8 years. These are all available as full wave files, down to mini MP3 things.

2011 begins with a bang! A Soft UPdate

2011 has begun beautifully for us here at Soft Records. Following on from the boon of having Deviant Nature, Album Of The Week on FBi and 2SER, the album has been a Top 20, a Top Pick, it’s been playlisted and highly praised from radio around the country.
4ZZZ had this to say: “Having already been made feature album across a number of stations I thought we better pay more attention to the strangely psychedelic sounds floating out of Kevin Purdy’s corner of the world. Unsurprisingly it was well worth the effort. From cute slices of psych-pop to full blown prog epics, Deviant Nature is intricately detailed and lushly executed. In a time where a lot of mind-bending music gets put out, and a lot of it is very good, Purdy is some of the best”
Tim Ritchie announced on his program Sound Quality, “I’m pleased to say, this is a winner, I think it’s a winner record”
Paul Gough of Radio National’s Quiet Space and FBi’s Paul’s Playlunch voted the album #2 in his Top 20 for 2010.
On top of that Purdy has appeared on the Sound Lab on Triple J and the Night Air Live, with Brent Clough on Radio National, as well as a recieving fine review in Spectrum by Bernard Zuel, and it’s only been out for a matter of weeks.
